Avodart (Dutasteride)

Avodart, also known as dutasteride, is a drug generally used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, it has also been studied for its potential efficacy in treating male hair loss, a condition known as androgenetic alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia is often caused by genetic and hormonal factors, in particular the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This DHT contributes to the progressive reduction of hair follicles, leading to hair loss.

Avodart acts by inhibiting DHT production, which could potentially reduce hair follicle miniaturization and slow the progression of hair loss. It belongs to the same drug family as finasteride, but has a longer lifespan and mainly sexual side effects, prompting the use of smaller doses at longer intervals or other means of administration.

Before taking any medication, it is therefore essential to consult a healthcare professional to discuss your specific concerns, medical history and appropriate treatment options.
