Spironolactone against hair loss

Is spironolactone effective for hair loss?

Spironolactone (Aldactone) is a hypotensive diuretic sometimes used as an anti-hair loss treatment. Its anti-androgenic action has been observed, and it is used by male-to-female transsexuals. It blocks male hormone receptors, inhibits male hormone metabolism enzymes and increases estrogen. There are no studies proving its efficacy in men with hair loss, but this does not prevent many patients from using it for this purpose. Its use in women with hair loss seems more logical, as its anti-androgenic effect may justify its use in women producing too much male hormone. However, you shouldn't expect it to have a very strong effect.
